We have now booked our September speaker who is our first social scientist: Allen Sanderson, senior lecturer in economics the U. of Chicago. He is one of our most-frequently interviewed economists. His topic for the pub: "Sports, Statistics and Economics."

Here is a more detailed summary of what Allen proposes to talk to us about:

          The publication of Moneyball (in 2003) was certainly not the first attempt to put sports, statistics and economics under one roof, or between two covers.  But it generated a vast amount of popular interest among intelligent lay readers, various media, and academic scholars  -- economists, statisticians, law and business faculty, and other social scientists  in the application of models and measurement, and strategic decision-making, to winning ball games and making money at it. Currently "The Economics of Sports" is taught at many universities across the
country and abroad.  In our time together we will look at the hits, runs and errors of the past decade, and the past 50 years, to examine where the intersection of these three fields has advanced the ball, where it comes up short of the goal line or net, and where it's likely "headed"  (pun intended)  in the years ahead.  Plus, of course, why I hate soccer!

First Science Pub at Grady's Grill Tuesday March 29

The inaugural H-F Science Pub will be held at Grady's Grill
in Homewood.

The Talk will be given by Dr. Peter Doran (that's me) on some of my work in Antarctica and astrobiology. The title will be

Human and Robotic science in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of East Antarctica

We will start the talk at 8 pm, but you are welcome to come and mingle ahead of time. That's the idea!

The second lecture will be at the Flossmoor Station Brewery about a month later and we will post info on who is speaking, topic and time. To get this info emailed - sign up for the email list to the right there.
